"Verdance"

The fresh dance of trees and plants in spring is SO special it deserves a special word, so this one is my own creation: ver·dance [ˈvərd(ə)ns] n., the green movement of spring. e.g. “The verdance of green foliage in the breeze was mesmerizing.”

My favorite “verdance” is usually seen from the top of Iowisota’s north bluff, from where I view the maze of islands clothed in soft green of unfolding flowers and leaves in the dancing canopies of the trees. I didn’t get to the top of the bluff last week, so Dennis shared a view he captured from out in the slough, looking in toward the south bluff.

A quick walk up the trail after last week’s rains revealed many new companions have joined the verdance. The droplets of rain clung to the “umbrellas” of mayapple leaves as they began to unfold. The bright, crinkled leaves of the gooseberry arched over the delicate flowers hanging below the twigs… so many flowers that it gave rise to hope of enough fruit for both me and the catbirds come June! The tender basswood leaves began to unfurl from their buds, enticing me to browse a few in a tasty spring salad. There was so much fresh green, the energy and excitement of spring was thrilling!

I’ve been up in the Northwoods for the weekend, where the verdance is not yet in full swing; I’m so excited to return to the green hillsides of Iowisota tomorrow!

The abundance of fresh green plants (and maybe mushrooms?) is perfect for the early spring wildflower and foraging workshop next Saturday. There are still spots left if you want to join us (rain or shine!).

Meanwhile, get out and enjoy the verdance!
