And So It Begins...

So many new beginnings to report this week! We have made our first event available to RSVP for on the Iowisota website! Weather permitting, we will be welcoming people to come learn about maple syrup production during the first two weekends in March. The educational component is free; if visitors choose to reserve an overnight stay, that is available at a reduced introductory rate.

Speaking of weather permitting, I put taps into a first set of 10 maple trees today. We have sap dripping into the buckets! This is exceptionally early, but we have had an extensive warm spell here and the pattern of temperatures above freezing during the day and below freezing at night appears likely to continue for another 2 weeks. If winter returns (as I expect it will), these taps may dry up, but in the meantime, we should have some sap to do a first run of syrup and test out our equipment. We hope we will have good conditions later in the Spring to set more taps in other trees.

What else is new? We fixed a few things on the website, so you should be able to subscribe to our contact list (which gets you informed of new blog entries and upcoming events). We started an Iowisota business Facebook page (feel free to like and follow us!). We keep moving forward with a bunch of those behind-the-scenes business things. And we started to get books out of boxes and onto bookshelves. And so it continues!
